Wedding Cake Strain: Genetics, Flowering Time & Grow Guide

Wedding Cake is one of the dessert strains growers ask for by name. The version we carry is Wedding Cake autoflower seeds from Atlas Seed, so this guide is about growing that plant: what the breeder says it is, how an autoflower differs from a photoperiod plant, and how to get a good harvest from it in a Canadian grow.

Wedding Cake Genetics and Lineage

Atlas Seed describes its Wedding Cake Auto as an autoflower backcross (Bx) of the original Wedding Cake. A backcross means the autoflowering line was crossed back to the original Wedding Cake, to keep more of the parent’s character while adding the autoflowering trait. Atlas lists it as an indica and places it in its cream, cake, cookies and candy family.

We stick to what the breeder publishes. Atlas does not give a THC figure, a yield or a flowering time for this strain, so we do not quote one either.

Autoflower, Not Photoperiod

This is the main thing to know before you plant. A photoperiod plant keeps growing leaves until you cut the light to 12 hours a day. An autoflower starts flowering on its own as it ages, whatever the light schedule. For Wedding Cake Auto that means:

No light switch. Indoors, most growers keep the lights on about 18 hours a day from seed to harvest.
A shorter, fixed life. You cannot hold an autoflower in the vegetative stage to grow it bigger, so the first few weeks count.
Every seed is female. The seeds are feminized as well as autoflowering, so there are no male plants to find and remove.

How to Grow It Well

Autoflowers lose time every time they are moved. Germinate the seed and plant it straight into the container it will finish in. A pot of roughly 10 to 20 litres suits most indoor setups.

Train gently, early

Low-stress training (bending and tying the main stem so the side branches catch more light) works well on autos. Do it in the first few weeks. Heavy topping late in the plant’s life can stall it, because there is no extra time to recover.

Watch humidity late in flower

Dense buds hold moisture. In the last few weeks, keep humidity lower and keep air moving through the canopy with a small fan to cut the risk of mould.

Outdoors in Canada

Because autos do not wait for shorter days to flower, you can plant after the last spring frost and harvest before autumn rain. Around mid-May suits southern Ontario, earlier on the BC coast, and late May to early June on the Prairies. Always check your provincial plant limits before you plant.

Should You Grow Wedding Cake Auto?

If you want the Wedding Cake line without managing a light schedule, or you have a short outdoor season, the autoflower is the practical choice. If you want a large plant and full control over when it flowers, a photoperiod strain will suit you better.
