Granddaddy Purple is a California indica built from two clear parents. Purple Urkle supplies the colour and the grape-candy smell. Big Bud supplies size: fat, heavy colas that pull branches down late in flower. Together they made one of the best-known purple strains around.
Why GDP turns purple
The deep purple of a finished GDP comes from anthocyanins, the same pigments that colour grapes and blueberries. The Purple Urkle side carries a lot of them, and cool nights in the last weeks of flower bring them out. A warm room can still give a dark plant, but a few cooler nights make the colour far more reliable.
Growing from regular seeds
Regular seeds give roughly half males and half females. Grow out more seeds than the plants you want to keep, and watch for the first pre-flowers at the branch joints: small sacs mean male, wispy white hairs mean female. Remove males before they open unless you want to make seeds. If you are hunting a mother, take cuttings from each female before you flip so you can keep the best one.

How to grow Granddaddy Purple
GDP is an easy-going indica. Support is the main job: put up stakes or a net before flowering, because Big Bud genetics make colas heavier than the branches expect. Keep humidity low and airflow strong, since the buds are dense enough to hold moisture.
Flip to 12/12 once the plant fills about half your space; the Big Bud side adds weight more than height. Outdoors, a plant in full sun gives about 500 g. Read more in our Granddaddy Purple grow guide.
