Why it is called White Widow
By the last weeks of flower the calyxes and the small leaves around them are coated so thickly in trichomes that the buds look frosted. That white coat gave the strain its name in the Netherlands in the 1990s, and it is still the trait growers notice first. The aroma is citrus and pine over an earthy base, sharper than it is sweet.
The parents are a Brazilian sativa and a South Indian indica, two landrace lines that balance each other. The sativa gives the plant reach and an open canopy, while the indica keeps the internodes tight and the flowers dense.
An easy, forgiving plant
The label rates White Widow easy, and its long run as a beginner's favourite backs that up. It tolerates a range of feeding schedules and holds its shape without much training. A sea of green of small plants or a few topped plants under a screen both work well.
The one thing to manage is moisture. All that resin sits on tight flowers, and tight flowers trap humidity. Keep air moving through the canopy in the last three weeks and defoliate lightly so the inner buds dry between waterings.

How to grow White Widow
Veg under 18 hours of light, then switch to 12/12 when the plants are about half the final height you want; it stretches moderately after the flip. Flowering takes 8 to 9 weeks, and a well-filled space can give 400 to 500 g/m2.
Outdoors, a plant that starts flowering in early August is ready around early October. That works in southern Ontario and on the BC coast in a dry year, and in a wet autumn a greenhouse protects the dense flowers. A full season in the ground can bring in 500 to 600 g per plant.
