A hash plant from the mountains
Afghani comes from the dry mountain valleys of Afghanistan, where farmers grew it for hashish long before anyone sold seeds. That history explains the plant: a short, sturdy indica with thick stems, broad dark leaves and flowers that cover themselves in resin to cope with cold nights and hard sun.
Because it is a landrace rather than a modern hybrid, the plants come up close to uniform. Breeders still reach for Afghani when they want to add weight, resin and a shorter bloom to a cross, and its shape shows up in many of the indica hybrids grown today.
What the jar smells like
The label lists earthy, fruity and sweet, and that is accurate: a sweet, fruity top note over damp earth, with the spice and hash smell you expect from a resin plant. Rub a stem in late flower and it leaves a sticky, incense-like smell on your fingers.

How to grow Afghani
This is a feminized photoperiod, so it stays in veg under 18 hours of light and flowers after the switch to 12/12. It stretches very little after the flip, which makes it easy to plan: veg it close to the height you want and it will not double on you.
The label gives 60 to 100 cm, 7 to 9 weeks of bloom, about 300 g/m2 indoors and 400 g per plant outdoors. Topping once and tying the branches out turns its single main cola into several, which suits a low tent or a SCROG net.
The label rates it intermediate, and most of the skill involved is moisture control. Leaves are large and the buds are dense, so keep humidity down in late flower and pull the big fan leaves that shade the middle of the plant.

Is Afghani a good plant for making hash?
It was grown for hash for generations, and the heavy resin coat is the reason. Growers who make dry sift or ice water hash often keep it for exactly that.
Will Afghani finish outdoors in Canada?
Its short bloom helps. It finishes earlier than most photoperiods, but in a short or wet season give it a greenhouse so the dense buds stay dry.
