Sweet from one parent, sour from the other
Black Cherry Soda gives Ace of Spades its fruit: dark cherry, berry and a fizzy, candied sweetness that is most obvious when the flowers are first broken open. Jack the Ripper pushes back with lemon, sour citrus and pepper. The result reads sweet and sour on the nose and earthier once cured, a pairing that stands out in a line-up of jars.
Black Cherry Soda is also known for dark foliage, and many Ace of Spades plants inherit it. Expect purple to near-black sugar leaves on some phenotypes, especially when the last weeks of flower bring cooler nights.
Shaping a medium plant
At 100 to 150 cm it suits a standard tent. Jack the Ripper adds some stretch after the flip, so a plant that looks compact in veg can gain noticeable height in early flower. Top once, train the branches flat and set a screen before the flip, so the stretch fills squares instead of reaching for the light.
The flowers are firm and resinous. Pull the large fan leaves that shade bud sites around the third week of flower and again a few weeks later, so light reaches the lower tops and air moves through the middle.

How to grow Ace of Spades
Veg under 18 hours of light, then move to 12/12. Plan on 8 to 10 weeks of flowering, and check the trichomes rather than harvesting by date: the darker phenotypes can look finished before the resin is.
Grown outside, Ace of Spades is usually ready in the first half of October. In the Fraser Valley or around the Great Lakes, a greenhouse helps it through the October rain; in a dry, sunny spot it can give around 500 g per plant.
