A landrace from the South African coast
Durban Poison takes its name from the port city of Durban on South Africa's east coast, where it grew for generations as a local sativa before travellers carried seed out in the 1970s. It is a landrace rather than a modern hybrid, and that shows in how uniform the plants are: narrow leaves, long internodes and a strong upright habit.
The aroma is the classic one, sweet and earthy with a clean pine edge, and many plants carry a faint aniseed note when the flowers are rubbed. The trichome heads are large and plentiful, which is why hash makers have kept it around for decades.
Fast for a sativa
Most pure sativas take noticeably longer to finish. The label puts Durban Poison at 8 to 9 weeks of flowering, and that early finish is its most useful trait in Canada. Outdoors, a photoperiod plant starts flowering as the nights lengthen in August, so this one lands around the end of September or early October, ahead of the worst autumn rain in southern Ontario and the BC interior.

How to grow Durban Poison
These are feminized photoperiod seeds: veg under long days, then switch to 12/12 to start flowering. Expect the plant to keep stretching for the first two or three weeks after the flip, so flip earlier than you would with an indica and leave headroom above the tops.
Landraces rarely want heavy feeding, so run nutrients on the light side and watch the leaf tips. Train it flat with low-stress training or a screen to turn its upright habit into many even tops. The label rates it easy, and it is one of the more forgiving sativas to learn on.
