Why growers pick it
The name, on a short clock
It flowers on age, not on day length. Outdoors that means a summer harvest. Indoors it means one light schedule from start to finish.
It suits a small space
Autoflowers start flowering a few weeks after they sprout, whatever size they have reached, so they finish shorter than most photoperiod plants. That makes them the usual choice for a tent, a closet or a balcony.
You can plan around it
Because the cycle is fixed, you can count forward from the day you sow and know roughly when you will be harvesting. That makes it easy to stagger plants and keep a tent full.
What Wedding Cake Auto is
Wedding Cake is one of the best known names in the cake and cookies family. The catch for a Canadian home grower is that the original is a photoperiod plant. It waits for the days to shorten before it flowers, and outdoors that pushes harvest late into fall.
Atlas Seed's answer is an autoflower backcross. A backcross, written Bx, means the breeder crossed the new autoflowering line back to the original parent. The point is to keep the autoflowering trait while pulling the plant back toward the Wedding Cake it started from. Atlas describes it in one line: their auto Bx of the classic Wedding Cake. They list it as an indica.
Effects
Growers describe the effect in the same terms as the cake and cookies family: a sweet-tasting, easy start followed by a heavy, settled body feel. The label calls it an indica, and the effect leans that way, with a calm head and a slow pace. This is mostly an evening plant. Take it slowly the first time: the label gives 19 to 23% THC, and strength can vary between plants.
Flowering, harvest and cure
Atlas Seed gives about 75 days from seed to harvest, which is quick: it moves into flower by age and then ripens over several weeks. In late flower you should see dense, frosty buds with thick resin and orange pistils. Check trichomes under a loupe rather than counting days, and cut when most heads are cloudy with some amber. Dense indica buds dry slowly, so give them ten days or so with gentle airflow before curing in jars.
Growing Wedding Cake Auto in Canada
Plant Wedding Cake Auto straight outdoors from the end of May into early July, after nights warm past about 10 C. Because this plant flowers by age, there is no need to wait for shorter days, and in the warmest regions two runs are possible. Sow it in its final pot, since autos dislike being moved. Dense cake-type buds are the main risk: in coastal BC and in Ontario and Quebec, a wet September can bring bud rot, so favour the earlier sowing dates and keep the canopy open. On the Prairies, sow by mid June so the last weeks do not meet early frost.
Wedding Cake outdoor calendar for Canadian cities
Wedding Cake flowers on age, so the calendar starts from when nights stay warm (about two weeks after the typical last frost) and counts about 75 days from seed to harvest.
| City | Sow outdoors | Expected harvest | Runs per season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vancouver, BC | May 20 | Aug 5 to Aug 12 | 2 runs (last sowing by Aug 13) |
| Kelowna, BC | May 20 | Aug 5 to Aug 12 | 1 run (sow by Jul 18) |
| Calgary, AB | Jun 6 | Aug 22 to Aug 29 | 1 run (sow by Jun 23) |
| Edmonton, AB | May 21 | Aug 6 to Aug 13 | 1 run (sow by Jul 1) |
| Saskatoon, SK | Jun 4 | Aug 20 to Aug 27 | 1 run (sow by Jun 23) |
| Winnipeg, MB | Jun 6 | Aug 22 to Aug 29 | 1 run (sow by Jun 30) |
| Toronto, ON | May 23 | Aug 8 to Aug 15 | 1 run (sow by Jul 28) |
| Ottawa, ON | May 25 | Aug 10 to Aug 17 | 1 run (sow by Jul 9) |
| Montreal, QC | May 20 | Aug 5 to Aug 12 | 1 run (sow by Jul 15) |
| Halifax, NS | May 26 | Aug 11 to Aug 18 | 1 run (sow by Jul 28) |
Dates use typical frost dates for each city and shift a week or two with the year, so check your local forecast before planting out and in late September.
Who Wedding Cake Auto suits
Wedding Cake Auto suits growers who like the cake flavour profile but cannot wait for a photoperiod to finish in fall. It is a sensible fit for small tents, balconies and short Canadian seasons. The breeder, Atlas Seed, made it as an autoflower backcross, so it is also a fair pick for anyone who wants the original's traits on a short clock.

Will it finish where you live?
BC coast and southern Ontario
Yes. It finishes ahead of the autumn rain. Dense cake-family flowers hold moisture, so keep air moving late in flower.
Indoors, any province
Yes, year-round.
How to grow Wedding Cake Auto
Sow it where it will finish
Plant the seed 6 to 13 mm deep in its final pot. An autoflower that stalls after a transplant does not get the time back.
Keep the lights at 18 hours
There is no switch to 12/12. Run 18 hours on and 6 off from seed to harvest.
Train gently, and early
Bend and tie branches down in the first few weeks to open up the plant. Skip late topping. An auto has too little time to recover from it.
Watch humidity at the end
Keep the air dry and moving in the last few weeks. Dense flowers are where mold starts.
